Automatic does not always mean AI
A machine can react without a person pressing a button every time. That alone does not tell you whether it uses artificial intelligence.

Look for the decision
Imagine a lamp controlled by a simple timer. At the time someone sets, the timer switches the lamp on. This example follows a fixed rule. Calling it “smart” would not explain the rule or make it AI.
Now imagine software that uses examples of past activity to predict when light will be useful. That is a different proposal: a prediction can be wrong, the examples may not fit a new situation, and the person still needs a way to choose.
These examples compare a straightforward rule with a pattern-based AI proposal; they are not a complete definition of every kind of AI. Real products may combine several approaches. Ask what a particular feature actually does instead of classifying the whole product by its label.
Try the three-card challenge
Your fictional classroom wants a reminder when its reading time ends. Write one idea on each card:
- Person-controlled: a person checks a clock and gives the reminder.
- Fixed-rule: a timer rings after a duration chosen by the adult.
- Possible AI: a system predicts when the group is ready to stop.
For each card, ask: what tells it to act, what information does it need, and who decides whether the reminder is right?
Challenge the impressive-sounding idea
The prediction idea leaves a big question unanswered: how would it know the group is ready? Faces, voices, or reading histories would introduce privacy concerns and still would not guarantee a good judgment. A scheduled reminder might solve the actual problem without collecting any of that information.
Use made-up examples only. Do not record classmates, upload work, or test a monitoring tool. The challenge is to compare designs, not build surveillance.
Explain the tradeoff
A timer can ring at an inconvenient moment, too. A simpler system is not automatically perfect. Compare usefulness, mistakes, information collected, and whether the adult can change or stop the reminder.
Finish with a reasoned decision: “We would use ___; if ___ goes wrong, the person can ___.” The goal is a clear explanation, not an answer that always includes AI.
